We've been looking for the remains of molten mountains, so the search is
of a different type than when looking for isolated rocks.
Well, technically they might not have been mountains. The expected
sedimentary layers for the Jurassic are missing, which is consistent with
my estimate of a 115 Mya impact at Black Rock. But there is a scarcity of
Jurassic formations across the region; we haven't figured out if the
sediment is missing from the entire region or if individual areas were
lost due to isolated events (such as the more recent volcanic activity
across northern Nevada).
